Sattvic Date Bites

This past weekend we went on a little surf trip for my son’s birthday. It was just a few hours drive and the scenery was not much different than what we have at home (the beach), but just a few days of being together without distractions and enjoying an activity that my guy and (to some extent) my kids get really excited about was just what we needed.

I really love traveling and being spontaneous as I think it’s important to get a fresh perspective on life from time to time and to get out of the routines that we make for ourselves, but I’ve found that if I don’t do a little planning, I end up eating and doing things that can throw me out of balance and then the vacation just isn’t as enjoyable as it could be.

On this recent trip, I made a point to look up restaurants that offered some more balancing food options ahead of time and also stopped by the local organic grocer to buy a few staples for our hotel room.

It was there that I found some little date balls rolled in almonds. I’ve seen them at grocery stores before, but had never been very interested in trying them. They just looked rather unappealing and I’m not a fan of packaged foods to begin with. This time however, knowing the Ojas enhancing properties of dates and wanting to have a sweet treat on hand for the weekend, I decided to give them a try.

To my surprise and delight, I really enjoyed them. I would take a couple out of the fridge as a mid-day snack after being on the beach for hours or as a dessert with dinner and they were just so satisfying. I prefer to make my own over buying from a store as the fresher it is, the more prana is in the food, but I was glad to have finally tried these little date bites and been inspired in so doing.

So, if you can, don’t emphasize the appearance and just give them a try. This is a sweet that is actually a treat for your body rather than a hindrance. Dates along with freshly roasted nuts and a little ghee or coconut oil is a recipe for nourishment and vitality. Enjoy this recipe as a replacement to a possibly less healthy sweet that you tend towards and see how you feel. Also, add or substitute ingredients as you prefer- the possibilities for pure date bliss are endless! :)
